The 3-truck collision stopped, diverted traffic on both expressways during afternoon rush hour
A man died Tuesday following a collision involving three dump trucks on Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway, police say.
The crash happened in the westbound lanes near the York Street on-ramp, a spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service told CBC News.
In a news release late Tuesday, police said three dump trucks were travelling westbound on the Gardiner when two of them collided with a passenger sedan.
Police said a man, 50, was driving one of the dump trucks, a white and red one, when he suffered an “unknown medical emergency.” His vehicle struck a white sedan and then a silver dump trailer, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the trucks was caught fire after the collision, police said.
The Gardiner was closed to westbound traffic near the Spadina Avenue exit during the afternoon rush hour, according to police, while westbound traffic on the Don Valley Parkway was diverted at the Bayview/Bloor exit.
All impacted lanes, on-ramps and exits on the DVP and Gardiner were reopened shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The TTC put out alerts saying “all surface routes” were experiencing major delays in the downtown core due to traffic disruptions caused by the collision.
Police are asking local residents, businesses and drivers, who may have security or dashboard camera footage of the area or incident, to contact investigators.
