CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver July 7-13

This year’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Safe Driver Week will be focused on ‘dangerous’ and ‘reckless’ driving.

Between July 7-13 law enforcement personnel in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. will be extra focused on commercial and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in unsafe driving behaviors, such as speeding, distracted driving, following too closely, drunk or drugged driving, and more.

According to CVSA, any person who drives a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is driving recklessly. Careless or dangerous driving is defined as operating a vehicle without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for other motorists or people on the road.

Speeding has been a factor in more than a quarter of crash deaths since 2008 and is the most frequent driver-related crash factor for drivers of commercial motor vehicles and passenger vehicles. Meanwhile, distracted driving claimed 3,142 lives in 2019, and 10,142 people died in the U.S. due to drunk driving that same year.

“Operation Safe Driver Week aims to improve the safety of our roadways through proactive driver safety outreach and education, and by addressing unsafe driving behaviors through responsive traffic enforcement when drivers are identified engaging in dangerous driving behaviors on our roadways,” CVSA said in a news release.

Operation Safe Driver Week is part of CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Program, which offers resources for commercial motor vehicle drivers, teen drivers, and new drivers. The program also includes safe-driving public service announcement videos that are available for downl
