1 pickup truck hit another, creating a chain reaction, RCMP say
A multi-vehicle crash at the eastern edge of Winnipeg claimed the life of one person and left another seriously injured on Tuesday.
Three pickup trucks were heading west on Dugald Road when one hit another, causing a chain reaction around 12:30 a.m., police say.
The contact between the two trucks caused the driver of the first truck to lose control and veer to the right, hitting the side of a semi-trailer at the intersection of Dugald and the Perimeter Highway, according to RCMP. The semi was stopped for a red light in the southbound lane of the Perimeter Highway.
Meanwhile, the pickup truck that was initially hit then collided with the third pickup truck. Both went through the intersection and ended up on the west side of the Perimeter Highway, RCMP said in a news release.
The man driving the pickup that hit the semi was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the second pickup was rushed to hospital in Winnipeg with serious injuries. The driver of the third pickup was treated and released on scene.
The pickups were all driven by men in their 20s, the RCMP said. The 69-year-old man who was driving the semi was not injured.
Brian Seaton, fire chief for the Rural Municipality of Springfield, which borders the city, told CBC News his crews were called about a pickup truck that was on fire with someone trapped inside.
When they arrived, crews from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were there and had started to extinguish the flames.
The Springfield crews took over the scene, shutting down roads as collision analysts examined the scene and debris scattered across the area was cleared away.
The roads reopened around 8 a.m.
RCMP are still investigating and have not announced if any charges will be laid.
