‘Bizarre situation’: 2 men arrested, OPP use spike strip to stop stolen truck on QEW

No injuries and no collisions were reported, says Sgt. Kerry Schmidt

Two men are facing a “list of charges” after OPP officers used a spike strip to stop a stolen transport truck tractor on the QEW.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the “bizarre situation” started on Highway 403 near Highway 407 after the truck was reported stolen.

Officers tried to stop the truck but it wouldn’t slow down.

Instead, they followed it for “quite a distance” along the 407 and 403 in Burlington and Hamilton and toward Brantford.

The truck then turned back around on the 403 and headed up the QEW toward Niagara Falls, said Schmidt.

It turned around once more by Casablanca Boulevard where provincial police from Niagara and Burlington used a spike belt to deflate its tires.

The two men were taken into custody near Fruitland Road, according to Schmidt.

No collisions and no injuries have been reported.

The QEW was temporarily blocked off in both directions while police arrested the men and the truck was taken away for further inspection.

Schmidt said the men will face multiple charges and said the OPP is expected to release more details later this morning.
