Driver in stable condition, one passenger sustained minor injuries
An STM bus driver was taken to hospital after a collision with a tractor-trailer in Montréal-Nord.
The 46-year-old driver was in critical condition Monday morning but is now stable, Montreal police said.
The incident took place at around 9:00 a.m. near the corner of Pelletier Avenue and Henri-Bourassa Boulevard Monday morning.
Police say the 60-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer was stopped at a red light when the STM bus collided into it.
“We don’t know the real reason of the impact. Maybe the driver had a health issue, he was just not looking in front of him, that’s all going to be part of the investigation,” said Montreal police spokesperson Const. Benoît Boisselle.
The STM driver was trapped in the bus. First responders used the Jaws of Life to free him, and he was then taken to hospital with serious injuries to his lower body.
The truck driver was not injured, Boisselle said.
There were five passengers on the bus at the time but only one of them, a 56-year-old man, suffered from minor head injuries, he said.
The Montreal police collision unit is analyzing the scene.
