2 hospitalized, 1 in critical condition after QEW collision near Beamsville

Transport truck collides with road maintenance crew on highway early Wednesday, police say

Two people were hospitalized — one in critical condition and the other with serious injuries — following a collision on the Toronto-bound Queen Elizabeth Way in Beamsville on Wednesday morning, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a 22-year-old Kitchener man suffered life-threatening injuries, while a 39-year-old woman suffered serious injuries.

According to Schmidt, shortly after midnight, a transport truck driven by the 22-year-old man hit members of a road maintenance crew who were fixing potholes. The injured woman was a member of the crew.

Schmidt said the crew had blocked the left-most lane and middle lane of the QEW, allowing traffic on the right lane.

“The transport truck approached from the middle lane colliding into the sign truck that was protecting the road maintenance area,” he said.

All lanes of the Toronto-bound QEW were closed at Victoria Avenue approaching Ontario Street for several hours, but have since been reopened.
