Continued shortage of truck drivers across Canada

Truck drivers are still needed across Canada.

“Current estimates are, there are about 25,000 truck driving vacancies across the country,” says Chris McKee, Executive Director for the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association.

He adds they have gotten creative in their efforts to attract more drivers.

“Leveraging international drivers that have experience in their home country, bringing them over, training them up to our current standards. We have several outreach programs and tools that we use to try and entice the younger generation to join,” McKee adds.

This includes an extensive 12-week internship program, with 340 hours of classroom and practical instruction followed by 100 hours in the truck with a sponsoring company.

“We hope the industry will continue to adopt this.  It provides the best outcome for students to be employable and safe truck drivers,” McKee stated.
