Highway near Corner Brook reopens after being blocked by overturned fuel truck

Motorists can bypass closure by entering Corner Brook through Massey Drive and Riverside Drive

The Trans-Canada Highway near Corner Brook reopened late Thursday after a tanker truck overturned and caused an extensive fuel spill across the road.

The truck overturned on an exit ramp heading east on Thursday morning.

Emergency crews on the scene freed the driver, who had been pinned inside the truck.

After being closed through the rest of the day, westbound lanes of the highway were open as of 8 p.m. NT, RCMP said.

By about 11:45 p.m. NT, all lanes were open again as the cleanup concluded.

Earlier in the day, motorists were directed to bypass the closure by entering Corner Brook through the Massey Drive and Riverside Drive exits.

Traffic was also being diverted through Corner Brook using the exit at Watson Pond and the Corner Brook Industrial Park.

Fire crews hosed down the truck to prevent the ignition of the spilled fuel.

Emergency crews created a wide perimeter around the truck.
