Flatbed carrying corrosive chemicals overturns in downtown St. John’s Thursday morning

First responders and emergency officials responded to the scene of an overturned flatbed truck in downtown St. John’s Thursday morning.

The truck flipped on its side just before 8 a.m. at the corner of Water Street and Cochrane Street. Two large tanks of corrosive liquid toppled with it, with one of them leaking an unknown amount of fluid.

The driver was not injured.

A crane was brought in to right the flatbed. An official on scene told The Telegram that the leak was contained and did not flow into any storm systems or the harbour. The damaged tank, and possibly both tanks, will apparently be pumped out to be inspected for damage.

Traffic is being diverted around the scene until it can be cleared.
